Remember Stickies?Well the developer of Stickies has some other note worthy programs; one of them is Caffeine. Caffeine is a very simple program designed to accomplish one task and one task only: to prevent your computer from locking/going to sleep/turning on the screensaver/turn off monitor/etc.
Hi, I just had to ressurect this thread. I have a 1-year old black macbook running 10.5.5, and just tonight I had the same exact problem - when running on battery power, if I move for a bit, the screen will go blank for a few seconds. And magically turn itself back on again. I can tell my computer is still running and when the screen turns back on nothing seems to have changed.
Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET We've all been there: You're watching a video or running a slide deck, when suddenly the screen dims. Or you step away from the PC for an extended period and come back to find it locked out or in standby mode. Why does this happen?
I'll be sharing a solution that I found. I'll guess that OP has a laptop with an AMD GPU/iGPU. Basically the graphics driver is causing the screen to dim. To fix this, right click your desktop, then (probably at the top of the menu), click 'AMD Catalyst Control Centre' Then, under 'Power', click 'PowerPlaytm'. Within the new menu that is brought up, look at the bottom where it says 'Enable Vari-Brighttm'. Your problem should be solved, as was mine. I had the same problem.

This only works with when the MacBook is connected to an external display, so start there. Tip 1: Use The Terminal Don’t be afraid – launch Terminal app and type or paste the following code in: sudo nvram boot-args='iog=0x0' Then type in your main password when prompted. You’ll need to restart your Macbook, but be sure it’s connected to that external display – this will shut off your internal screen until you use the following command to change it back: sudo nvram -d boot-args Then reboot again. If you accidentally disconnect the MacBook from the display, you’ll need to zap the pram, which entails holding Command-Option-P-R when restarting. Tip 2: Use the System Preferences Be sure to have your MacBook plugged in for this one.
Oh and when you use the mouse pad it leaves light trails on the screen. Mar 29, 2012 I have been using lots of software - indesign, photoshop, illustrator as well as other programs at the same time and my laptop started to slow down. I then tried to force quite pages and it wouldn't work so I had to force shut down.
With this simple guide, we’ll show you how to keep your monitor’s brightness settings stand at attention at all times. How to keep your PC’s screen from dimming When at the desktop, hold the Windows key and press R to pull by the Run dialog box. From there type in “control panel” without the quotes and press Enter. Scroll down to and click on “Power Options.” Locate your active power plan and click on the blue button labeled “Change plan settings,” which should be located to the right. If you’re using a notebook, then you have two rows of drop down menus to contend with, which should be labeled “On battery” and “Plugged in.” The first setting from the top of each column should be labeled “Dim the display.” Under both “On battery” and “Plugged in,” click the drop down menu, select “Never” and click “Save changes.” If you’re rolling with a desktop PC, the “On battery” column should not be present. From here on out, your PC’s display will stay bright and shiny, freeing you from the tyranny of having to poke your mouse to wake it fully again.
